Finding the Perfect Off-Campus Housing
Published October 17, 2026
Finding off-campus housing is exciting, and it can feel overwhelming. You want a place that’s convenient, affordable, safe and comfortable. Here’s how to find it.
1. Set your budget
Decide what you can afford before you look. Add up rent, utilities, groceries, transportation and everything else you pay for. A common guideline is to spend no more than about 30% of your income on housing. A budget keeps you from falling in love with a place you can’t afford.
2. Research the neighborhoods
Some are closer to campus; others are farther but cheaper. Compare them on safety, the distance to campus and public transportation, and the shops and restaurants nearby.
3. Check the amenities
Is there laundry on site? Parking? A gym or a place to study? Decide which amenities matter most to you and filter for them in your search.
4. Read reviews
Look up the property and the landlord or management company on Google and other review sites. Pay attention to complaints that come up more than once.
5. Visit in person
Tour your top choices if you can, or ask for a video tour. Look at the condition of the place and the neighborhood, and ask questions: What’s included in the rent? What’s the pet policy? How are repairs handled?
6. Consider roommates
Sharing a place splits the rent and utilities. Choose roommates who are reliable, and agree on the rules up front. (See Living With Roommates.)
