Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions from renters and the people who list rentals on StudentRent.com.

For renters

Do I have to be a student to rent through StudentRent.com?

No. StudentRent.com is built for students, but anyone looking for student-friendly housing near a campus can search and contact listers.

Do I need an account to search?

No. Searching is free and needs no account. Use the ♥ on a listing to save it; saved listings are kept in your browser on that device.

How do I contact a property manager?

Use the form on the listing page. Your message goes through StudentRent.com, the lister replies from their dashboard, and the reply is emailed to you. Neither side sees the other’s email address.

Why don’t I see any listings for my area?

Only live listings appear in search. Older listings expire or are taken down, and new ones are posted all the time. Try a larger distance, a higher max price, or clear your filters. If you still find nothing, check back soon or post a listing to claim the spot.

What do the symbols on the map mean?

Each pin shows the monthly price and an icon for the type of listing: a bed for a room for rent, a house for a single unit and an apartment building for a multi-unit listing. Click a pin to preview the listing.

Why can’t I find apartments or houses I expect?

Leave Housing type on Any to see every type. Ticking a type shows only that type, and a listing that has no housing type will not match it.

Does StudentRent.com check the listings?

No. We do not verify listings, listers, licenses or registrations. Every listing shows the lister’s statements and any license or registration they entered. Please verify the details yourself before you sign a lease or send money.

How do I report a suspicious listing?

Use Report this listing on the listing page and choose a reason. Reports are reviewed, the lister is asked to respond, and a listing with several open reports is taken out of search while it is checked. The person who reports is never named to the lister.

Posting a property

Which listing type should I choose?

Room for rent for one or more rooms in a shared home (several rooms in the same house need only one listing). Single unit for a whole house, condo, townhouse or apartment. Multi-unit for a building or complex with several units and floor plans.

Can I post a sublet?

Yes. A sublet can be a single room (a roommate leaving for the summer) or a whole home (everyone leaving). Choose the type that matches and mark it as a sublet. For a sublet you must have the landlord’s permission.

What does it cost to list?

Individuals listing a room or sublet can post free for 45 days, or pay $9 for a Featured listing for 45 days. Property managers choose a plan (Starter, Growth or Pro) and every plan starts with a 14-day free trial with no card needed. See the pricing page for current prices.

What does Featured mean?

Featured listings appear in the Featured column on the home page and stand out in search. Starter includes 1 featured listing, Growth up to 5, and on Pro every listing is featured.

How long does a listing stay live?

A listing stays live for 45 days. You can renew it from your dashboard before or after it expires.

How do I change or remove my listing?

Sign in and open Manage my listings. From there you can edit, pause, renew, mark as rented or delete a listing at any time.

How do photos work?

Upload up to the allowed number of photos per listing; we convert them to a web-friendly format and remove location data from the files. New photos are reviewed before they appear publicly, and in the meantime renters see a blurred placeholder.

What do the license and registration fields mean?

If your city or county requires a rental license or registration, enter it so renters can see it. You will also confirm that the property exists, that you own it or are authorized to rent it, and that it is suitable and legal to rent. StudentRent.com does not verify these statements.

How do I get inquiries?

Renter messages arrive in the Inquiries tab of your dashboard and you reply there. We email the reply to the renter from StudentRent.com, so your email address stays private.

Can I promote my listing outside the site?

Yes. The Promote tool on each listing makes posters, flyers, yard signs with a QR code and ready-to-post captions for social media and email.

Your account

Do I need to verify my email?

Yes. New accounts are activated by a single-use link sent to your email address. The link expires after 24 hours. If it does not arrive, check your spam folder and ask for a new one on the sign-in page.

I had an account on the old StudentRent.com. Can I still sign in?

Yes. Use the same email address and password. Your password is upgraded to our newer, stronger storage the first time you sign in.

I forgot my password.

Choose Forgot password? on the sign-in page and we will email you a link to choose a new one. The link works once and expires after an hour.

Why am I asked for my date of birth?

Some forms and features are for adults and teens of a minimum age. We ask once, keep only what is needed to confirm your age, and do not share it with listers.

Why does the site use cookies?

We use cookies to keep you signed in and to protect forms from abuse. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Is paying on StudentRent.com safe?

Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number, and we will never ask for card or bank details by email.
