Living off campus in Eau Claire
Most UW-Eau Claire students move off campus after their first year or two. The university's own housing office says off-campus living can cost less per month and gives you more space and privacy. It also comes with costs the dorms cover for you, so budget for a security deposit, utilities, internet, parking and snow removal on top of rent.
Getting around is easier than you might expect. Blugold students ride the campus bus routes, and any Eau Claire city bus, free with a valid Blugold ID, so a place a few miles from campus doesn't need a car. Check the current routes and times with Eau Claire Transit before you sign.
Read your lease closely, because most Eau Claire off-campus leases run a full year and everyone named on it is equally responsible for the rent. In Wisconsin, a landlord has 21 days after you move out to return your deposit. Fill out a check-in report within seven days of moving in and photograph any existing damage. That protects your deposit when you leave.
