First-Time Renter Move-In Checklist and Tips

Published October 17, 2026

Moving into your first place is a big milestone. This checklist keeps you organized from signing the lease to settling in. Take it one step at a time, and adjust it to your situation.

Before you move

Secure the place

  • Sign the lease and keep a copy.
  • Pay the deposit and any fees, and get a receipt.
  • Get renter’s insurance.

Set up utilities

  • Arrange electricity, water, gas, trash and internet as needed. Your lease may already include some, so check first.
  • Schedule installation appointments, if required.

Change your address

  • Update it with the post office.
  • Tell your school, bank, employer and subscription services.

Pack smart

  • Gather boxes, tape, packing paper and markers.
  • Declutter first: sell, donate or toss what you don’t need.
  • Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in.
  • Pack as if the boxes will be bumped, dropped and stacked.

Moving day

  • Pack an essentials box with toiletries, a change of clothes, medications, chargers and snacks.
  • Plan transportation for large items, and keep tools handy to assemble furniture.
  • Bring cleaning supplies so you can clean before you unpack.

When you arrive

Inspect the unit

  • Check walls, flooring, lighting, door and cabinet hardware, and test the appliances.
  • Photograph and write down any existing damage, and report it to your landlord.
  • Use the landlord’s inspection form if there is one, or use the one in our First Time Renters Guide.

Safety first

  • Test the smoke detectors and replace batteries as needed.
  • Make sure the door and window locks work.
  • Confirm that all utilities work, including the internet.

Settle in, room by room

  • Start with the bed, the bathroom and the kitchen.
  • Assemble and arrange furniture.
  • Stock basic groceries and cleaning supplies for the first week.

After you move in

  • Update your address on your driver’s license, ID and other official documents.
  • Update your address for online accounts and subscriptions.
  • Explore the neighborhood: shops, restaurants and public transportation.
  • Say hello to your neighbors.
  • Decorate, following your lease rules, and finish organizing storage.
  • Take time to enjoy your new place.
